Marwa Sherbini: The Hijab Martyr - خواطر أحلام

Stand up for the Muslim woman who was viciously killed, guilty of one thing: her religion.

On July 1^st 2009, in a courtroom in the German province of Saxony, pregnant Marwa Sherbini was stabbed to death by a German man of Russian descent whom she had sued for insult and abuse.

Marwa’s 3 year-old son, Mostafa, witnessed his mother’s brutal death and watched his father being shot by German police when he was struggling to protect his wife against her aggressor.

Her assassin had called her a “terrorist”, “Islamist” along with other racist insults in a playground in August 2008 when she asked to use the swing for her son.

Marwa had sued him for insult and abuse. Found guilty and fined, the man attacked her inside the courtroom, pulling out a knife and stabbing her 18 times.

Hundreds of Egyptians took part in the funeral of Marwa Sherbini. Angry over the official silence that lasted more than a week after Marwa was killed.

Dresden also witnessed angry protests by more than 800 people after a funeral prayer that called her killing an outrageous racist murder against Muslims.

Marwa and her husband, Elwi Ali Okaz, moved to Dresden in 2003, after he received a grant to study genetic engineering in the renowned Max Planck Institute.

Bloggers around the world are expressing their anger and condemnation for this awful racism crime. Therefore, we, as devoted Jeeran bloggers, should also stand up for this cause, ask for justice and give our condolences to Marwa’s family.

Let’s write about and for Marwa, and cry out for justice and human rights in a world where human beings are being killed for their beliefs, dressing codes and convictions.
